How do I get a permit?

There is no way in this area to have a permit issued to you without having to go to the local Motor Vehicle Division office.  Unfortunately for some, the experience wasn't fun.  But in fairness to the Motor Vehicle Division, many of the applicants were not properly informed about the application process or they weren't prepared to successfully pass a knowledge quiz.  Do yourself a big favor, and get a free Driver License Manual (99-0117 R03/07) at the Motor Vehicle Division office or our office and carefully read pages 7 thru 14; paying particular attention to identification and legal guardian signatures requirements.

I heard if I take Driver's-Ed I don't have to take a driving test.  Is this true?

Partly true....what your friends are trying to tell you is while you are completing your in-car training in a State Certified Driver's-Ed Program, your instructor is authorized by the Motor Vehicle Division to give you a driving test.  If you pass, you will be issued a special certificate at the end of the program which you will keep until you are eligible and ready to get your license.  Presenting this certificate to the examiner when processing your application for a driver's license will free you from needing to make an appointment and take the driving test.  Understand, whether it be with your Driver-Ed Instructor or with the Motor Vehicle Division Examiner, you are required at sometime or another, to pass a driving test to qualify for a driver's license.

I want some in-car training but my permit has expired or will soon expire?

You must present a valid instructional permit to your instructor before you can get behind the wheel for a driving lesson.  Permits are renewable.  If your permit has expired, be prepared to re-take the written test when applying for renewal.  If it will soon expire, apply for renewal before it expires and you will avoid re-testing.  Renewal fee is $7.00.
