How do I get a permit?

You must obtain a permit from the Motor Vehicle Division office.  Get a free Driver License Manual at the Motor Vehicle Division office or our office and carefully read pages 7 thru 14; paying particular attention to identification and legal guardian signatures requirements.  Study the manual prior to taking the written test that you are required to pass in order to earn the permit.  A-1 Driving School is authorized, through the MVD, to administer the permit written test as part of our Driver Education Course.  Upon successfully passing the written test with A-1 Driving School and completing the classroom portion of the course, we issue an MVD certificate that our students then present to the MVD to obtain the permit.

I heard if I take Driver's-Ed I don't have to take a driving test.  Is this true?

Partly true....what your friends are trying to tell you is while you are completing your in-car training in a State Certified Driver's-Ed Program, your instructor is authorized by the Motor Vehicle Division to give you a driving test.  If you pass, you will be issued a special certificate at the end of the program which you will keep until you are eligible and ready to convert your permit to your license.  Presenting this certificate to the examiner when processing your application for a driver's license will free you from needing to make an appointment and take the driving test.  Understand, whether it be with your Driver-Ed Instructor or with the Motor Vehicle Division Examiner, you are required to pass a driving test to qualify for a driver's license.

I want some in-car training but my permit has expired or will soon expire?

You must present a valid instructional permit to your instructor before you can get behind the wheel for a driving lesson.  Permits are renewable.  If your permit has expired, be prepared to re-take the written test when applying for renewal.  If it will soon expire, apply for renewal before it expires and you will avoid re-testing.  Renewal fee is $7.00.

Is your teen ready to drive?

While the law may allow your teen to earn a driving permit at the age of 15.5, parents should evaluate their teen's readiness for driving.  Beyond being able to operate a vehicle, teens must develop the right attitudes about driving.  Some things to consider:

Does your teen generally show good judgment?

Does your teen generally resist peer pressure with risky or harmful behavior?

Are you (parent) familiar with teen driving issues and current laws, such as Graduated Drivers License laws.

Have you and your teen discussed the details of "safe driving" and what it requires of your teen?

In our Driver Education course we address not only the physical requirements and actions of driving, but also the correct attitudes required for teens to be safe & lawful drivers.
